Regional collaboration leads to long-awaited cleanup in Village of Sheridan

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. (10/27/15)  – Today, the Montcalm Economic Alliance and The Right Place, Inc., along with its state and local partners, announced the approval of a $415,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), for the Village of Sheridan, Montcalm County, Michigan. The approved CDBG grant will fund the demolition and remediation of the former Carnation factory located in the village.

“The approval of these CDBG funds are critical to our ability to safely and effectively remediate the property,” said Susan Wyckoff McFarland, President, Village of Sheridan. “I cannot put into words how much this means to our community. It is going to change the face of the village and create a safer, more beautiful community for our citizens.”

The project site, located at 600 South Main Street, Sheridan, Michigan, is occupied by a long vacant and neglected industrial structure that is currently owned by the village. The project will involve a hazardous materials survey and abatement proceeding any active removal, as well as complete demolition of all structures on site, site cleanup and proper management of any contaminated soils.

The demolition and blight abatement is expected to result in a vacant, publicly owned site which is seeded with grass and maintained by the Village until a future use can be defined.

“Without the collaboration from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Montcalm Economic Alliance, The Right Place, and the Village of Sheridan, this project would not have happened,” said Rick Chapla, Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, The Right Place, Inc. “This site has been a barrier to economic development and growth in Sheridan for too long. The results of this project will open new opportunities for investment and growth.”

Over the next several weeks, the Village of Sheridan will begin the planning and bidding process for the project. Although there is not a set completion date for the project, it is expected that the work will be completed in the next 12-24 months.
