    West Michigan’s 2015 economic development successes and 2016 predictions offered at annual West Michigan Economic Outlook event

    GRAND RAPIDS, MICH (DECEMBER 10, 2015) – Today, regional economic development organization The Right Place, Inc. hosted its 19thannual West Michigan Economic Outlook at the J.W. Marriot hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. The event featured a year-in-review presentation by The Right Place, Inc. President and CEO Birgit Klohs as well as an in-depth economic analysis and forecast for West Michigan in 2016 by George Erickcek and the W.E. Upjohn Institute.
     
    In addition to her remarks on the organization’s annual results, Klohs also announced a new partnership with Hello West Michigan
     
    2015 Right Place Accomplishments
    During her presentation, Klohs highlighted several notable accomplishments the organization achieved in its 30th year of operation, including:
    • Over the course of its 30 years, the organization has spurred nearly $4 billion in capital investment and 40,000 jobs.
    • Completing 16 economic development projects in the region in 2015, resulting in 1,327 new and retained jobs, $44.2 million in payroll, and $169.9 million in capital investment.
    • Tracking against The Right Place’s 2014-2016 3-year strategic plan, the organization has spurred the creation of 3,520 new jobs, on a goal of 5,500; $123.4 million in payroll, on a goal of $183 million; and $484.9 million in capital investment, on a goal of $390 million.
    • Among the organization’s regional work in the 13-county West Michigan region, The Right Place achieved progress in key areas:
      • Signed a new economic development service contract with Newaygo County.
      • Assisted Lake County in the establishment of the Lake County Economic Development Alliance.
      • Completed 5 economic development projects with our partner communities in Ionia and Montcalm counties. 
    “2015 was a very successful year for The Right Place,” said The Right Place, Inc. President and CEO Birgit Klohs. “We have already surpassed our 3-year strategic plan goal of generating $390 million in capital investment by generating nearly $485 million. And, we remain optimistic on achieving our job creation and payroll goals. We are very excited at the economic development opportunities for West Michigan in 2016.”

    Hello West Michigan Partnership
    This week, The Right Place Board of Directors voted affirmatively to begin the transition of Hello West Michigan, and its staff, from the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce to The Right Place. The partnership between Hello West Michigan and The Right Place, Inc. will commence January 1, 2016. The Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce is fully supportive of this transition and is proud to have supported Hello West Michigan since its inception in 2010.
     
    Over the past five years, Hello West Michigan has grown into a successful talent attraction and retention initiative. This new partnership will leverage The Right Place’s regional focus and expand Hello West Michigan’s vision into a 13-county area and become a regional hub for talent attraction and retention efforts.
     
    Both organizations, The Right Place and Hello West Michigan, also share a common goal – attracting and retaining world-class talent and companies in West Michigan. Given that common goal, this new partnership will better leverage the assets of both organizations, addressing the region’s talent shortage, getting job candidates connected, finding talent for employers.
